About 4-H
4-H is the largest out-of-school youth program in the United States. Through 4-H, young people learn and grow, with guidance from caring adults, to develop the skills and confidence needed to become productive contributing members of society. Because 4-H uses an active, learn-by-doing approach, young people see how their actions make a difference in the lives of others and the world around them.
Oregon 4-H, and Hood River County is affiliated with Oregon State University. Volunteer adults who work with 4-H youth are invited to do so only after they undergo extensive background checks. They must also participate in training that includes topics such as club organization, risk management, and working with youth.
4-H membership is open to all youth enrolled in kindergarden through 12th grade withough regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or marital/parental status. (Dog 4-H however is limited to youth in 4th grade or above, as the child must be able to handle a dog with minimal help from an adult.)

The Dog Project
Throughout the year 4-H members learn about the evolution of the dog, responsible dog ownership, dog health and nutrition, dog showing, and dog training and behavior. Some of the process is self taught with the guidance of dog educated volunteers helping them through each step and providing updated information about their project topic.
